The Legacy Builder

Researchers have argued that teachers are the most paramount resource in determining students’ future academic success and lifetime outcomes (Chetty, Friedman & Rockoff,  2014). The Legacy Builder workshop focuses on having transparent dialogue with K-12 educators to identify strategies and practices to improve teacher efficacy when working with African-American students. The workshop challenges K-12 educators to examine their interactions with African-American students to identify intentional measures that can be taken to nurture their development. Additionally, the workshop identifies supports and tools to improve teacher retention. Overall, the program seeks to ask educators the question, What do you want your teacher legacy to be? After participating in the Legacy Builder workshop, educators will leave with:

  • Tangible strategies to prepare K-12 African-American students for post-secondary options

  • A blueprint for creating safe places to support teacher retention and efficacy

  • Empowerment to take ownership of one’s actions on the population’s legacy in addition to their own teacher legacy
